KINETIC THEORY OF MATTER

We all know that matter is made up of tiny particles, such as atoms, molecules and ion. The kinetic Theory of matter postulates that these particles are continually moving and possess kinetic energy. Increase in temperature causes increase in average kinetic energy of the particles States of matter Matter exist in three physical states Solid Liquid and Gas solid state Various types of solids are formed by different chemical combinations. The particules are closely packed together an held firmly by force of cohesion. There movement are fixed in a position and can only vibrate and rotate about their fixed point but they cannot move from one place to another, they have definite shapes and volumes, they are difficult to compress. Liquid state The particles in solid are slightly futher apart than those in solid. They have more kinetic energy and are no longer held in fixed position. They can vibrate, rotate and move from one place to another, they are still under influence of cohesive force and their movement are restricted. A liquid still possess volumes but no definite shape or form,i.e they take theshape of the container in which it is placed. Aliquid is hard to compress. Gaseous state In a gaed, the particles have more kinetic energy than those in liquid. The cohesive in gas are negligible and particles are free to move about in a great speed, restricted by the walls of container. Agas has no definite shapes,it occupies the whole volume of its container. Gas particles are relatively far apart and may be readily compress.
